Two Alabama students were sent to the hospital after a dangerous crash in the Huntsville City School District, thanks to what appears to be negligence on the part of the school bus driver. According to the Huntsville Police Department accident report, the bus driver ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle at an intersection.
Both the bus driver and two children were taken to a nearby Huntsville Hospital, and in the accident’s aftermath, the parent of a Huntsville student is filing a class action lawsuit against the bus driver and Durham School Services (the service providing transportation for the Huntsville City Schools).
Unfortunately, Alabama bus accidents like these are far too common.
Alabama School Bus Accidents
In the 2014-2015 school year alone, there were 80 children hurt in school bus accidents in the state of Alabama. Including bus drivers, other drivers, and vehicle passengers, 107 people were injured in these accidents. 412 collisions were reported on the whole.
Worse, some of the fatal accidents that take the lives of Alabama children are “100 percent preventable“. When accidents like these happen, Alabama families may be entitled to compensation for their unnecessary harms and injuries.
A negligent bus driver is not the only way Alabama families can recover for harmful school bus accidents that injure children. Other parties that may be held liable include the school bus manufacturer or the company that provides school bus services and transportation.
Still, while different factors contribute to bus accidents, driver negligence is always a primary concern. If a driver is fatigued, inattentive or careless, lives of Alabama children are needlessly jeopardized. Similarly, school bus companies have a responsibility to keep passengers safe by regularly inspecting vehicles and performing necessary maintenance.
Some drivers may be following all the rules of the road, but they are simply operating a vehicle that never should have been on the road in the first place. When the bus company itself is negligent, parents may file a lawsuit that holds those companies accountable.
No matter what causes the school bus accident, the damage inflicted in these wrecks can be severe, if not fatal. School bus accidents cause significant injuries to passengers such as:
Many of these injuries require extensive medical treatment, surgery, and rehabilitation so that Alabama children receive the critical medical care they need. In some circumstances, lifelong care becomes a reality for too many Alabama parents and families.
