If you have ever suspected that your fellow Alabama residents are the worst drivers in the country, you will be happy to know that you are wrong in that assessment. Florida takes those honors. Still, Alabama ranks in the stop 10, coming at number 6 on the list.
This news comes from data gathered by SmartAsset.com, and the rankings were calculated based on the following factors:
- The percentage of insured drivers
- DUI arrests per 1,000 drivers
- Vehicular related deaths per 1,000 drivers
- Google trends on automobile ticket-related topics
Regarding Alabama’s ranking at number 6 on the list, SmartAsset mentions that Alabama is similar to some of its neighboring southern states with a bad driving reputation. 33% of vehicular deaths in Alabama resulted from a driver being over the legal limit, but there is a silver lining to the research as well. Alabama did have the 4th best score with only 1.42 DUI arrests per thousand drivers.
Even so, some might reasonably argue that Alabama ranks well on DUI arrest simply because police are underfunded and cannot keep Alabama roads safe. Count the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) among those who would agree with this line of reasoning. Given the safety risks of dangerous driving on Alabama roads, Alabamans need to protect themselves by obtaining uninsured motorist coverage.
Dangers on the Road Make Uninsured Motorist Coverage a Necessity
Between 15 and 26% of Alabamans have not obtained uninsured motorist coverage, which is a risk drivers simply cannot afford to take. Many drivers willing to take the risk of drinking and driving are uninsured. If you are the victim of a drinking and driving accident in which the drunk driver did not insurance, compensation through your uninsured motorist coverage may be your only option.
Even if you take Uber and rarely drive on your own, uninsured motorist coverage is still an essential worth having. If an Uber driver is negligent and gets you into an accident, your first thought may be to sue the driver and/or hang your hat on the hopes that the driver’s insurance will cover you. This is also a risk you should not take. In all likelihood, Uber drivers are not wealthy, so suing the driver is not bound to be a great outcome. And, if you are banking on insurance to save you, why not take the guesswork out of it and get uninsured motorist coverage.
This type of insurance is one of the least expensive insurances you can buy, and as a bonus, it offers some of the most protection. Opt for coverage of at least $100,000 if you can afford it. If you are ever in a wreck, the difference between $100k or more of coverage vs. $25,000 makes an enormous difference when it comes time to restore and repair your life.
